On an industrial tour around Taiwan earlier this year, president Tsai Ing-wen said during a meeting with industry leaders in Taichung that the greater Taichung area, which also encompasses Changhua and Nantou, will play an essential role in the country's next generation of economic and industrial development.

According Tsai, her administration will strive towards developing Taichung into the capital of a smart machinery industry cluster in the greater Taichung area by accelerating the upgrade of the industry.

The president said that given the more than 160,000 employees in the machine tool and machinery-related sectors in the greater Taichung area, she wants to turn the area into a smart machinery industry hub by pooling the resources of the government, business and academic sectors.

Calling the transformation of the region into a smart machinery capital a national strategy, Tsai said that in the future, a policy-making panel composed of representatives from the central and local governments will be formed to aid the development of Taichung based industries in many fields, including land acquisition, talent recruitment, marketing, research and development, international cooperation, mergers and acquisitions.

She said that the short-term goal is to accelerate the upgrading of the machine tool and precision machinery industry into a smart machinery industry to boost the general production value and exports of the sector.

Tsai also mentioned her government will focus on increasing innovation in the aerospace and biomedical industries and the development of smart apps.
