Taiwan ranked 21st globally in internet speed: report

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) In the first quarter of 2016, the average internet connection speed in Taiwan stood at 14.8 Mbps (megabits per second), making it the 21st fastest in the world and fifth in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a quarterly report on global internet speeds.

South Korea continues to be the global leader with the highest average connection speed of 29.0 Mbps, followed by Norway (21.3 Mbps), Sweden (20.6 Mbps), Hong Kong (19.9 Mbps), and Switzerland (18.7 Mbps), according to content delivery network Akamai's State of the Internet report.

The No. 6 to No. 10 countries are Latvia (18.3 Mbps), Japan, Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Finland (17.7 Mbps).

Taiwan's average connection speed of 14.8 Mbps is a 15 percent increase from 12.9 Mbps in the fourth quarter of 2015 and a 46 percent leap from Q1 of 2015, according to the report.

As for the average peak connection speeds, Taiwan ranked eighth in the world with 83.1 Mbps.

The fastest five countries are Singapore (146.9 Mbps), Hong Kong (110.3 Mbps), Indonesia (110.2 Mbps), South Korea (103.6 Mbps), and Qatar (89.2 Mbps).

The No. 6 to No. 10 countries are Macao (85.9 Mbps), Japan, Taiwan, Romania, and Mongolia (80.4 Mbps), said the report.

Taiwan's peak connection speed of 83.1 Mbps is a 5.4 percent rise from 78.8 Mbps in the fourth quarter of 2015 and a 20 percent jump from Q1 of 2015, according to the report.

Global average connection speeds rose 23 percent year over year to 6.3 Mbps in Q1 2016. Furthermore, 8.5 percent of users now have broadband speeds of at least 25.0 Mbps, the closest the figure has ever been to double digits.
